If your Epson keeps jamming on the same sheet or the same few pages, the machine almost certainly isn't broken. In the overwhelming majority of cases it's one of three things: the pickup rollers have lost their grip through a film of paper dust, the paper itself has picked up moisture and curled or stuck together, or a torn corner from an earlier jam is still sitting in the paper path fooling the sensor. None of these need a service call. All three are things you can check yourself in under ten minutes.
What trips people up is treating every jam the same way, pulling the sheet out and printing again without asking why it happened. A single jam is usually bad luck. A jam that keeps recurring on the same tray, the same paper, or the same point in the feed is the printer telling you something specific, and it's worth listening before you reach for a new printer.
Why does it keep happening rather than just happening once?
Epson's inkjets detect a jam using a sensor flag along the paper path, not by "seeing" the sheet the way you do. If a page skews, stalls, or arrives late because the roller slipped on it, the sensor doesn't register the expected timing and throws a jam error, even if the paper looks like it fed fine. Pull that sheet out, print again, and if the underlying cause (a glazed roller, a curled sheet) hasn't changed, the exact same thing happens on the next page. That's why "just try again" so rarely works twice.
The more deceptive version of this is when a previous jam leaves something behind. If a corner tears off as you yank the paper free, that scrap can lodge further down the path, near the rollers or against the sensor flag itself. From then on, every print job jams at roughly the same point, sometimes with no visible paper at all, because the sensor is being triggered by the leftover scrap rather than the new sheet. Check the pickup rollers first
This is the fix that solves the problem for most people, and it's the one least likely to be obvious, because the rollers look fine to the eye even when they've lost most of their grip.
Most Epson home and small-office inkjets, including the EcoTank and Expression ranges, pick paper up using small rubber rollers that rely on friction, not just shape, to grab the top sheet and pull it through. Over months of use those rollers accumulate a thin layer of paper dust and skin oils from handling. You won't see it as obvious grime; it looks more like a faint glaze. That glaze is enough to cut the roller's grip, so instead of pulling one sheet cleanly, it either skips the sheet entirely, grabs it at an angle, or picks up two sheets stuck together, any of which the jam sensor reads as a fault.
Epson's official fix, confirmed on its support pages for the R3000 and WF-8090 series among others, is to clean the roller with a soft, lint-free cloth dampened with water, rotating it by hand so you cover the full circumference rather than just the flat you can see. If a damp cloth doesn't restore the grip, run one of Epson's own Ink Jet Printer Cleaning Sheets (part number S041150) through the printer like a normal print job; the abrasive sheet lifts dust the cloth can't reach. Don't use alcohol or a dry wipe: alcohol degrades the rubber's tack over repeated use, and a dry cloth just redistributes the dust rather than removing it.
Rear feed slot or cassette: work out which one is jamming
Many Epson inkjets sold in the UK, particularly the EcoTank and mid-range WorkForce models, have two separate paper paths with two separate sets of rollers. If jams only happen on one of them, you've already narrowed the search considerably.

Overfilling the cassette is worth calling out on its own. Epson explicitly lists loading paper "exceeding the recommended thickness or quantity" as a jam cause, and it's an easy one to do by eye rather than by the fill line marked inside the tray. Likewise, edge guides that are slid in too snugly don't hold paper straight, they bow it slightly, which is often enough to cause a skewed feed on the next print.
Is it the paper, not the printer?
It's worth ruling this out before you assume a fault, because Epson's rollers are being asked to grip whatever you load, and not all paper behaves the same once it's out of the packet.
Printer paper is rated to perform at a specific humidity range, and both directions of trouble are common. Copier and inkjet paper is generally recommended to be stored at 35 to 55% relative humidity, with roughly 45% considered ideal. Below about 40%, paper dries out and builds up static, which is exactly the mechanism behind sheets sticking together and feeding two at once. Above that range, paper absorbs moisture from the air and curls, and a curled leading edge is one of the most reliable ways to get a mechanical jam, because the roller can't grip a sheet that isn't sitting flat against the tray.
In practice, that means a ream of paper left open on a windowsill or above a radiator for a few weeks is a genuine jam risk even in a fully healthy printer. Fanning the stack before loading it (flicking through the edges to separate sheets that have started to cling together) and keeping the packet resealed between print runs solves this for most households without buying anything.
Cheap, low-quality stock compounds the roller-glazing problem from the previous section too: it sheds more loose fibre and coating dust as it feeds, which is what ends up as the glaze on your rollers in the first place. You don't need premium paper for everyday printing, but paper that's gone soft, old, or visibly fuzzy at the edges is worth binning rather than troubleshooting around.
When the "jam" isn't actually paper
If you've cleaned the rollers, checked the paper, and it's still throwing a jam error with no paper visible anywhere in the tray or output path, the next place to look is inside the printer body itself, not the trays. Epson's guidance for clearing jams on the L3250 and similar models walks through opening the front cover and scanner unit to check the internal path directly, because a torn fragment can sit somewhere you'd never spot by looking at the trays. It's worth doing this by hand rather than assuming a software reset will clear it, since the sensor will keep reporting a jam for as long as something is physically blocking its flag.
One genuine first-hand warning here: don't tip the printer on its side or upside down to shake a scrap loose, even though it's tempting when you can't see or reach it. Epson specifically warns against this on its jam-clearing pages, because tilting an inkjet can let ink leak from the internal tanks or cartridges into the mechanism, turning a five-minute paper problem into a much bigger one.
Is roller wear something you should expect over time?
Epson doesn't publish a general page-count interval for replacing pickup rollers on its consumer inkjets the way it does for some of its scanner lines, where a 100,000-sheet interval is quoted for models like the DS-6500 and DS-7500. Home and small-office print volumes are nowhere near that figure, which is likely why there's no equivalent published number for the EcoTank or Expression ranges: most households simply won't wear a roller out through use before dust glazing becomes the dominant problem instead. Still, if you've cleaned the rollers properly more than once and the same tray keeps failing, physical wear on the rubber's grip is a reasonable next suspect, and roller assembly kits are sold as replacement parts for exactly this reason.
The short version
Work through it in this order: clean the rollers with a damp cloth (or an Epson cleaning sheet if that's not enough), check whether the jam is limited to one paper path, rule out overfilled trays and pinched edge guides, and store your paper somewhere it won't dry out or absorb damp. If all of that's clean and the printer still reports a jam with no paper in sight, open it up and check for a leftover scrap from an earlier jam before you assume anything's actually broken.
