Why Is My Printer Printing Blank Pages?

The short answer

On an inkjet, blank pages nearly always mean ink is not getting onto the paper. The usual reasons are dried-up print head nozzles after the printer has sat unused, a new cartridge with its protective tape or air-vent seal still attached, or a cartridge that has actually run dry while the printer carried on feeding paper.

On a laser, a fully blank sheet points at the toner cartridge almost every time: a sealing strip that was never pulled out, a cartridge that needs rocking to spread the powder evenly, or an electrical contact inside the printer that is not connecting.

The other common cause has nothing to do with the printer. The blank page is in the file you sent: an empty last page in a Word document, a web page that will not print its background, or a jammed print queue passing garbled data to the printer.

One test tells you which side of that line you are on. Print the printer's own test page or nozzle check from its control panel, with no computer involved. If it comes out blank or streaky, the fault is in the hardware. If it prints perfectly but your documents do not, the fault is on the computer.

First, narrow it down

Four quick questions rule most things in or out.

Every page, or every other page? A blank sheet between each good sheet is a paper-feed fault, not an ink fault. The rollers are dragging two sheets through together and only one gets printed. Go straight to the double-feeding section.

Did it start right after a cartridge change? Then the cartridge is the first thing to check: tape left in place, wrong cartridge for the model, or a chip the printer refuses.

Has the printer been idle for a week or more? On an inkjet, that is the textbook cause of blocked nozzles. Pigment ink and dye ink both dry in the head, and in a warm, dry room it can happen in days.

Inkjet or laser? The fixes barely overlap, so settle this before you start. Inkjets use liquid ink and a moving print head. Lasers use toner powder fused with heat.

Inkjet: blank pages and the print head

This is the single most common cause of a blank-page complaint, and the one people most often make worse by panicking.

Diagnose it with a nozzle check, not a document

Every inkjet can print a nozzle check pattern from its menu, usually under Setup, Maintenance or Tools. It prints four blocks or a grid of fine lines, one per ink. A healthy head gives solid, unbroken blocks. A blocked head shows white gaps, missing lines, or a colour absent altogether. If the whole pattern is blank, either every channel is blocked or no ink is feeding at all, which moves suspicion to the cartridges or a vent seal.

Keep that first nozzle check. You will compare later ones against it.

Clear a blocked head the slow way

The instinct is to hit Clean Head five times in a row. That is the wrong move. Each cleaning cycle pumps ink through the head and dumps a measurable amount into the waste pad, the head warms up, and a hardened clog will not shift while it is warm and dry.

What actually works:

  1. Run one cleaning cycle.
  2. Print a nozzle check.
  3. If it improved but is not perfect, run one more cycle and check again.
  4. If it is no better after two cycles, stop. Leave the printer switched on, so the head stays parked over its rubber seal, and walk away for three hours or overnight.
  5. Try one more cycle the next day.

Most partial clogs clear within a day this way. Hammering the clean button in one sitting mostly just empties cartridges into the waste pad.

The soak, for a stubborn clog

If a channel is still dead after a day, the dried ink needs a solvent and time. On printers where the print head lifts out, which includes many Canon PIXMA models and some Brother and HP ones, take it out, sit the ink-inlet side in a few millimetres of warm distilled water or a proper print head cleaning fluid, and leave it for a few hours or overnight. Distilled water matters here. Tap water leaves limescale in the nozzles and makes the problem permanent. Dry the head, refit it, and run one cleaning cycle.

Most Epson models use a fixed Micro Piezo head, meaning the part that fires the ink is built into the printer body and does not come out without dismantling the machine. The clog that dried it can be a shipping issue too. On those, the equivalent fix is cleaning fluid drawn through the parked head, or a service by someone with the right kit.

When the head is finished

A print head that shows no improvement after a soak and a rest is usually beyond a home fix. What that costs you depends on where the head lives:

Printer type Where the print head lives Realistic fix for a dead head
Many Canon PIXMA, some HP Removable part, or built onto the cartridge New print head, roughly £25 to £60, fitted at home
Most Epson, including EcoTank Fixed inside the printer Paid service, often near the price of a new printer
Many HP, older Canon Built into the cartridge New cartridge, and the fault is gone

If you have an EcoTank a couple of years old with a dead head, a workshop repair rarely makes financial sense. Price a new machine before you commit.

The question people ask next: why does this keep happening to my inkjet? Because the head is designed to be used. If you print a handful of pages a month, an inkjet is the wrong tool, and a mono laser will save you the grief. If you are keeping the inkjet, put a colour page through it every week.

Inkjet: cartridge and ink problems

If the nozzle check is blank but cleaning does nothing, look at the cartridges.

Tape and vent seals. A new cartridge has a clear film over the nozzle plate or the metal contacts, and many also have a small coloured tab on top sealing an air hole. Miss the tab and a vacuum builds inside the cartridge as ink is drawn out, so the first page or two print and then everything goes faint and then blank. Pull every piece of tape off and refit.

Seating and contacts. Take each cartridge out and push it back until it clicks properly. Wipe the gold or copper chip contacts with a dry lint-free cloth, or a barely damp one, then dry them. A cartridge the printer cannot read is often treated as empty, and an empty cartridge prints nothing.

Empty even though the display says there is ink. Level indicators on inkjets are estimates based on page counts, not a look inside the tank. A cartridge can read a quarter full and be bone dry, especially a refilled or compatible one. Fit a known-good original to confirm. On most Canon models, holding the Stop button for about five seconds bypasses the low-ink warning so a nearly empty cartridge keeps printing, which is useful for testing.

Third-party ink, refills and firmware locks. This one catches people out because the timing looks like a coincidence. If blank pages or a "cartridge problem" error appeared right after a firmware update, the printer may have started rejecting non-original chips. HP calls its version Dynamic Security and has faced lawsuits and regulatory action in several countries over it. If you are on an HP Instant Ink subscription, the cartridges stop working the day the subscription lapses, even with ink left in them. Fitting the manufacturer's own cartridge, or rolling firmware back where that is still possible, is the fix.

The question people ask next: is compatible ink causing the blockages? It can contribute. Cheaper inks vary in how well they are filtered and how quickly they dry, and a badly made cartridge can starve the head. That is not a reason to pay full price forever, but if one brand of compatibles keeps clogging your head, switch brands or go back to originals.

Laser: blank pages

Laser blank pages are less varied than inkjet ones, and usually cheaper to sort.

The sealing strip. A new toner cartridge ships with a plastic pull-tab and a long orange or coloured strip that seals the toner in. It can be 30cm or more. If printing is blank from the very first page with a new cartridge, take it out and check that strip has come all the way out. While you are in there, look for any foam or tape near the toner bay that should have been removed at setup.

Rock the cartridge. Toner settles and cakes, particularly if the printer has stood for months or the cartridge has been stored on its side. Remove it, hold it level, and rock it end to end several times to redistribute the powder. Faint or blank pages from an older cartridge often clear with this alone.

Contacts and the drum. If the cartridge is sound, a blank page means the image is not being developed or transferred to the paper. The high-voltage contacts between the cartridge and the printer, which are small sprung metal plates, can be dirty or bent. Power off, remove the cartridge, and check the contacts on both sides are clean and springy. On printers with a separate drum unit, a drum at the end of its life or a poor earth connection to it produces pale, then blank, output.

One colour missing on a colour laser. If greens print as blue or a photo has a heavy colour cast, one toner or its drum has failed or is not seated. Reseat all four, and if you have fitted a compatible, try the original for that colour.

The question people ask next: my laser's own test page is fine but prints are blank, what now? That points at the driver and spooler, covered next. A clean internal test page all but rules out the toner, drum and contacts.

When it is not the printer

If the printer's own test page is perfect, stop opening flaps and look at the computer.

Word's blank last page. Word keeps a final paragraph mark that cannot be deleted. If it tips onto a new page, you get a blank final sheet every time. Press Ctrl+Shift+8 to show formatting marks, click just before that last pilcrow, and set its font size to 1 point, or nudge the bottom margin down. In Excel, a stray character in a distant cell stretches the print area across dozens of empty pages. Set the print area manually or clear it.

Browsers printing blank or half-blank. Chrome and Edge leave out background colours and images by default, so a coloured flyer or a ticket can come out nearly empty. Open More settings in the print dialog and tick Background graphics. For pages built by JavaScript that print blank, use the browser's Save as PDF option first, then print that PDF.

A jammed print queue. A corrupted job at the front of the queue blocks or scrambles everything behind it. Clear every document from the queue. On Windows, if a job will not delete, press Windows+R, run services.msc, find Print Spooler and restart it. On a Mac, right-click in the printer list under Settings, choose Reset printing system, then re-add the printer.

A separator page setting. If every job comes out with an extra blank sheet at the start, check the printer's properties in Windows for a Separator Page option and clear it.

PDFs with broken fonts or transparency. A PDF that prints blank or drops sections often contains a font or a transparency effect the printer cannot process. In Acrobat or Reader, open Advanced in the print dialog and tick Print As Image. It is slower, but it renders the page on the computer and sends a picture the printer can always handle.

The wrong or a damaged driver. If nothing else fits, remove the printer and its driver completely, then install the current driver from the manufacturer's website rather than a generic one Windows picks. A generic driver can print fine most of the time and blank certain jobs.

The question people ask next: how do I know it is the driver and not the printer? The internal test page. It bypasses the computer entirely. A perfect test page plus blank documents means a software problem, nearly always.

Every other page comes out blank

A blank sheet between every printed sheet is almost always double feeding: the printer picks up two sheets stuck together and prints on one.

Causes, roughly in order of likelihood:

  • Paper that is damp, or clinging together with static in a dry room. Fan the stack hard before loading and keep the ream in its wrapper between uses.
  • An overfilled tray. Fill to the line, not above it.
  • A worn separation pad or roller. This is the small rubber pad or roller meant to hold the second sheet back while the first feeds. It glazes smooth with age. It is an inexpensive part on most printers and a straightforward swap.

If it is a fresh ream and a lightly used printer, it is almost certainly static, and fanning the paper fixes it. If the printer is a few years old and has done tens of thousands of pages, budget for a new separation pad.

Repair or replace

For an inkjet more than two or three years old with a dead print head, the numbers rarely favour repair. Approximate UK street prices, early 2026:

Option Approximate cost Worth it when
Print head cleaning kit £8 to £15 Any inkjet, first stubborn clog, before anything drastic
DIY replacement print head £25 to £60 Canon or HP model with a removable head, otherwise sound
Local repair shop bench fee £40 to £80 before parts A pricey printer, or one under a service contract
New entry-level mono laser £70 to £120 You print mostly text, and not a huge amount
New entry-level inkjet all-in-one £40 to £70 You need colour and scanning and you print regularly
New refillable-tank inkjet £180 to £260 High colour volume, and you will genuinely use it weekly

The trap is spending £50 on a print head for a £60 printer. If the machine owes you nothing, replace it, and pick the type that matches how much you actually print.

Stopping it coming back

  • If it is an inkjet, print something in colour once a week. A single nozzle-check page counts. This is the whole reason infrequent users should not own inkjets.
  • Shut the printer down with its own power button rather than a switched socket. It parks and caps the head during its own power-down, and some models run a light maintenance pass on a timer.
  • Store spare cartridges upright, sealed, and out of a hot airing cupboard.
  • Keep paper in its wrapper, off the floor, and away from radiators and damp.
  • Turn off automatic firmware updates if you use third-party cartridges and your current firmware works.
